A Quick and Slightly Painful Truth

Gang, here is a funny truth that may sting a little. Every educator wants to help everyone. We walk into school ready to inspire, motivate, and change lives before lunch. Then reality taps us on the shoulder and says, “Good luck with that.” I laugh because I live it every day, and so do you. There are people in our classrooms, buildings, and meetings who will not move forward, no matter how much energy we put in. That does not mean we quit. It means we get smarter about how we lead, teach, and build culture.

 

 

1. The Unaware

The unaware person does not see a problem. They believe everything works fine throughout the day, with confidence, while everything around them signals concern. You see this with students who think their effort is enough when growth is minimal. I see it with adults who dismiss feedback and stay comfortable.

To improve climate and culture, emphasizing awareness is essential. Recognizing the need for change is the first step toward growth. Focus on modeling excellence and show clear examples of what success looks like. Repeat those examples again and again. Students and staff need to see the gap between where they stand and where they can go.

Culture grows through repetition. When awareness becomes part of daily practice, people start to reflect. Reflection builds growth. Growth builds a stronger environment for everyone.

 

2. The Resistant

The resistant person knows there is an issue, yet refuses help. This is the student who says, “I got this,” while everything falls apart. This is the colleague who hears a new idea and pushes back before trying it.

Resistance often connects to comfort or pride. Change feels uncomfortable. People hold tight to what they know. I understand that feeling. I have felt it myself.

To improve climate and culture, focus on willingness. Look for even a small opening; a slight shift in mindset can create movement. Support that moment with encouragement and structure. Give space for mistakes because growth never follows a perfect path.

Engagement plays a huge role here. When staff and students see value in what they do, resistance starts to fade. When they feel supported, they take a step forward. One step leads to another, inspiring a sense of purpose and impact.

 

3. The Distrusting

This one hits hard. The distrusting person does not believe in you. It may not even be personal. It may come from past experiences, failed leadership, or broken relationships.

In a school setting, distrust damages the climate faster than almost anything else. Students shut down. Teachers pull back. Communication breaks down.

Build trust through consistency and credibility. When educators see that actions align with words, they feel valued and motivated to foster positive relationships. Show up the same way every day. Follow through on what is said. Respect where people stand. Do not talk down to anyone.

Relationships matter, yet relationships alone do not solve everything. You must show that actions align with words. When people see that pattern over time, trust starts to grow.

Trust creates safety. Safety creates engagement. Engagement builds a positive culture where learning thrives.

 

4. The Uncommitted

The uncommitted person agrees with everything and changes nothing. They nod in meetings. They smile in conversations. Then they return to old habits.

This type can quickly weaken a school culture. When commitment is missing, consistency disappears. When consistency disappears, confusion takes over.

To strengthen climate and culture, focus on accountability and action. Expectations must stay clear. People must follow through. Action drives change. Without action, ideas hold no value.

Hold students and staff to a standard. Support them, yet also expect them to step up. When they take action, even in small ways, they start to see results. Those results build commitment.

Commitment leads to consistency. Consistency builds culture. That culture becomes the foundation for success.

 

5. The Wait-and-See

The wait-and-see person stands on the sidelines. They watch others take risks. They wait for perfect conditions that never arrive.

You might see this in classrooms during group work. Some students jump in. Others observe and hesitate. I see this in leadership decisions where action stalls because someone wants more certainty.

Here is the truth. Growth does not wait for comfort. Growth requires movement. It's time to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable.

To improve climate and culture, push for action even when it feels uncomfortable. When educators take that first step, they build confidence. Confidence increases engagement. Engagement strengthens the entire learning environment, empowering staff to lead change.

Bringing It All Together

Folks, these five types of people exist in every school. I do not say this to discourage you. I say this to ground you in reality. You cannot force change. You can create the conditions for change.

Climate and culture must stay a priority. Culture grows from what we repeat every day. Climate reflects how people feel in that environment. When there is a focus on relationships, consistency, trust, and engagement, create a space where growth becomes possible.

Advocate for learning that feels active and meaningful. Model the behavior expected. Stay consistent even when it feels tough and hold people accountable while showing respect. Promote professional development resources to support ongoing growth and reinforce positive behaviors.

Some people will shift. Some people will not. Our job is to lead anyway. Our job is to teach anyway. Our job is to Stand Tall and build a culture where commitment, growth, and connection thrive.

That is how we move forward. That is how we make a difference.
