Before You Walk Out the Door
May 17, 2026The copier jammed again. You can’t find your Chromebook charger, and a student asked if Friday counts as a “real day.” Your ears are ringing from the noise, and you would rather start dreaming about beach chairs and air conditioning. I get it, gang. The end of the school year feels like a marathon.
But before you walk out the door for summer, there are some important questions every educator needs to ask themselves. The way we finish a school year influences the building's climate and culture long after the buses leave campus. Students, staff, and families remember endings, and a strong school culture during the final stretch keeps engagement high.
What Message Does My Classroom Send Right Now?
Walk into your classroom and take a real look around.
Do students still see a place for learning, or do they see boxes, tape, and empty bulletin boards? Too many educators start packing early. I understand why. We all have summer plans. We all want a break, and it’s a big task. But when students watch teachers shut down the room before the final day, they receive a message loud and clear.
The school year is over.
That shift affects school culture quickly. Students start losing focus, and behavior issues begin to rise. Structure starts to fade, and trust starts to weaken.
If you need to organize materials, use planning periods or moments when students are not present. Organize closets and cabinets that the students don’t use. Keep the learning environment steady until the final day. Students deserve consistency. Great school culture depends on consistency.
Am I Celebrating Leaving or Celebrating Learning?
I have to climb on my soapbox for this one.
Countdowns to summer drive me crazy.
The giant paper chain. The morning announcement countdown. The whiteboard with “12 DAYS LEFT.” Gang, think about the message. All year long, we encourage attendance, relationships, growth, and engagement. Then suddenly, we celebrate escaping school? That’s ridiculous!
What message does that send? Some students love summer vacation, while others fear it. School provides safety, structure, food, encouragement, and connection for many kids. Students notice that adults celebrate leaving the building more than they do learning inside the building.
Instead of countdowns, create theme days or theme weeks to sustain excitement around learning experiences. A sports-themed day can include movement activities, sports statistics in math, and reading passages about teamwork, helping students stay connected to learning and to each other.
That approach protects school culture because students still feel connected to learning and to one another.
Did I Set Clear Expectations for the Final Weeks?
Students need structure until the final bell rings.
Middle and high school students, especially, love testing limits near the end of the year. They walk into class saying, “Miss Johnson lets us hang out.” Gang, they try that every year.
Do not panic. Do not argue. Lead.
Set expectations clearly and early. Tell students what the final weeks will include. Explain the learning goals. Share upcoming activities. Create a visible schedule.
Strong school culture grows when adults stay calm, confident, and consistent. Students often push boundaries because they want to know if the adults still care enough to lead.
Am I Finishing Strong for Every Student?
Some students fly through the finish line. Some crawl across it. Pay attention to both groups.
The quiet student in the back row still needs encouragement. The student with behavior struggles still needs dignity. The exhausted student still needs hope. The high achiever still needs purpose.
Strong school culture reaches every student.
This is the perfect time for handwritten notes, positive phone calls home, recognition ceremonies, or classroom reflections. Students remember moments when adults made them feel seen and valued.
Small moments like a sincere conversation or a smile at dismissal help students feel appreciated and connected, strengthening school culture beyond big events.
Those moments build commitment to school culture long after summer begins.

Did We Create Joy Before the Year Ended?
One of my favorite traditions as a principal happened during the final assembly. We held a giant rally in the gym. We played goofy games. We had music blasting. Students laughed. Teachers laughed harder.
Then we held what I called “the shifting of the classes.”
Each grade level moved into the section they would occupy next year. Seniors walked out while younger students moved into new seats. Incoming students entered through a tunnel of applause. You could feel the excitement in the building, maybe with a few proud tears.
That tradition strengthened school culture because students looked forward to returning.
One year, we added silly string. Another year, teachers wore clown noses as they waved goodbye to buses. The kids loved it. The staff loved it. Fun creates connection. Connection strengthens school culture and keeps kids coming back.
What Will Students Remember About Me?
Students may forget assignments. They may forget worksheets. They may even forget parts of the curriculum. They will remember how adults treated them.
Did you encourage growth? Did you model learning? Did you build relationships? Did you create trust? Did you show consistency?
Before you leave for the summer, think about the example you set during the difficult days. Anybody can lead during easy moments. Strong educators lead during stressful moments, too.
Did I Help Students Feel Excited About Returning?
This question changes everything. Many schools focus only on ending the year. Great schools also focus on beginning the next one.
Talk positively about next year. Celebrate growth. Build anticipation. Share future opportunities. Help students feel connected to the building before they leave it.
When students leave with excitement instead of relief, school culture grows stronger. They can’t wait to come back!!!
Announce a theme for the following year! That energy carries into August. It shapes attendance, engagement, behavior, and relationships before the first bell even rings.
So, Before You Walk Out the Door
Gang, the end of the school year matters more than many people realize. The final days shape memories, emotions, and momentum. Finish with:
- Purpose.
- Consistency.
- Joy
- Strengthening school culture for every student who walks through your doors.
The buses may leave. The hallways may quiet down. The classrooms may be empty.
But the impact of strong school culture continues long after the final bell.
