Hey gang, Stand Tall Steve here, and today I want to talk about something that often gets overlooked in schools but makes a massive difference in climate and culture: checking in with support staff.
When we talk about creating a positive school environment, we often focus on teachers, students, and administrators. But the truth is support staff are the backbone of a thriving school. Co-teachers, special education aides, child study team members, therapists, and other service providers work tirelessly every single day to make sure students succeed and teachers feel supported. If we want a strong school culture, we need to invest time and energy into helping the people who support others.
Here are my top strategies to make those connections meaningful.
1. Schedule Regular One-on-One Check-Ins
Do not wait until there is a problem to have a conversation. Take ten or fifteen minutes every few weeks to sit down individually with support staff. Ask how they are doing, what is working, and what could improve. This intentional time sends a clear message: you matter here.
2. Host Monthly Support Staff Meetings
Create a dedicated space where support staff can share updates, brainstorm solutions, and collaborate. Use these meetings to celebrate wins, clarify expectations, and provide the latest information they need to succeed.
3. Walk-and-Talk Conversations
Step out of your office and meet them where they are. Drop by classrooms, therapy spaces, and common areas for quick, casual check-ins. These moments build trust because they feel personal and genuine.
4. Use Quick “Temperature Check” Surveys
Short surveys give support staff a chance to share how things are going. Ask questions like, “What is going well?” and “Where do you need more support?” Afterward, act on the feedback so they know their voices influence decisions.
5. Recognize and Celebrate Contributions
Everyone wants to feel appreciated. Send handwritten thank-you notes, give shout-outs during staff meetings, or highlight their efforts in your school newsletter. Small gestures of recognition can create a significant shift in morale.
6. Provide Resources and Training
Support staff often face unique challenges and deserve the same opportunities for professional growth as teachers. Ask what training they want and then provide it. Equipping them with tools and strategies communicates that they are essential to student success.
7. Invite Input on Student Support Plans
Support staff often spend significant time with students and understand their needs deeply. Include them in meetings about IEP goals, behavior plans, and interventions. Collaboration leads to stronger strategies and better student outcomes.
8. Create a Shared Communication System
Keep everyone on the same page. Use collaborative tools or weekly updates to ensure support staff always have the information they need. A connected team leads to consistent support for students.
9. Offer Flexible Support Checkpoints
Some weeks are heavier than others. Give staff the option to request quick check-ins when challenges arise. Being available when they need you most strengthens relationships and avoids frustration.
10. Show Personal Care and Connection
Support staff are human beings first. Learn about their interests, families, and personal goals. Celebrate birthdays, drop notes of encouragement, or grab a coffee together. Building genuine relationships fosters belonging and trust.
Standing Tall Together
Checking in with support staff is not just a “nice-to-do.” It is a must-do if we want to create schools where everyone thrives. When support staff feel valued, empowered, and connected, students benefit, teachers benefit, and the entire culture of the school rises.
Take a moment this week to reach out, listen, and connect. A little bit of attention can make a lasting impact. Stand tall, take action, and lift up the people who lift up your school every single day.
